As human beings we all strive to live long, happy lives, but unfortunately this does not come easy. Sometimes things seem to get into our way of obtaining our goal, our Life’s Purpose. Some of these Life’s Struggles could be: health related issues, relationship problems, stress, anxiety; trauma… the list is endless. It takes courage and insight to make the changes needed and to manage difficult times. I can help you to transform the negative experiences in our life into more positive, fulfilling and happy ones and together we can work on you achieving the best health you possibly can.
I have worked with people with diabetes for many, many years and I understand how difficult it can be to have to live with this disease. It is easy enough for your doctor or healthcare practitioner to tell you to “follow a diet and do regular exercise”, but let’s face it: life throws us some dodgy curve balls from time to time, which makes this very challenging. We may not always have access to “healthy food” and working long hours means that finding the time to exercise is not always high on the agenda. I sometimes wonder how well your doctor or healthcare provider would cope without any real support if they were diagnosed with diabetes, I too would struggle without the right support.
How I can Help You
I provide short or long term counselling, coaching or psychotherapy along with diabetes education services.
Counselling and Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a form of counselling or therapy that involves talking with a trained mental health professional. Therapy is about having a particular type of conversation. This type of conversation helps you to increase your sense of well-being. Being in the presence of someone who accepts you begins to make you aware of how un-accepting you are of yourself and possibly of others. Psychotherapy is used to help you solve problems, achieve goals, and better manage your life and can be carried out one-on-one, in groups, or with couples or families. As your psychotherapist I make use of a range of techniques based on experiential relationship building, dialogue, communication and behaviour change that can help with a wide range of emotional and behavioural concerns including problems with family, friends or partners, and issues such as depression, anxiety or phobias.
Somatic psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy which includes the body and the mind. This may or may not include breath work, massage or other forms of physical touch, but this is entirely up to you; you set the pace. The aim of counselling and psychotherapy is to help you sort out the details of your life and empower you to make choices that are best for you. I aim to help you to explore and manage whatever is happening in your life. Maybe you have some worries or concerns that you need to think through, or possibly some difficult decisions to make. I can help you through difficult situations and provide you with an opportunity to move towards a more satisfying and resourceful experience of life. The combination of the varying therapeutic techniques helps you to go beyond symptom relief and achieve long-lasting change.
As a Clinical member of the Australian Somatic Psychotherapy Association (ASPA), I am committed to undertaking ongoing personal and professional development, including regular clinical supervision. I work within the stringent ethical guidelines required by ASPA and I am also a Provisional member of The Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and listed on the government regulated Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (ARCAP) register – see http://www.arcapregister.com.au/.
Diabetes Education Services
If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, or you have a family member with diabetes, you are probably reading this because you want to find out more about the disease. I can teach you all you like to know about diabetes, but also about related health issues such as hypertension (high blood pressure) and cholesterol. I can help you with weight management issues and in dealing with addictions such as smoking or alcohol… When you are diagnosed with diabetes you will find yourself facing a multitude of questions; I can help answer most of them. Together we can work on increasing your inner strength, your sense of self, and improve your chance of success. A session allows a space to express feelings, thoughts and behaviours; together we explore ways of making a change and enhancing your quality of life.
